One Last Wish – The Power of Together

It was 2011 when we had the privilege of extending another helping hand.

It is a story that still touches our hearts to this day.

Peet van Almelo was a man with a great passion for motorcycles. One day, while riding his motorcycle, he suddenly began experiencing pain in his side. He went to the doctor, expecting perhaps a simple explanation.

Instead, he received news that would change everything.

Peet was terminally ill.

We heard the news on a Saturday afternoon. We didn’t hesitate. We went to visit him.

Sitting there with Peet, it became clear that life had suddenly taken on a completely different meaning. Time had become precious. Every moment mattered.

Peet had one great wish.

He wanted to leave his wife a black Opel Corsa. Something practical, but also something deeply personal — a final gift to the woman he loved, something he could leave behind for her.

His motorcycle was sold.

And then something extraordinary began to happen.

We decided to bring people together.

Within one week, we reached out to as many people as possible. The idea was ambitious: we wanted to bring 1,000 motorcycles to Oldemarkt and create a huge motorcycle procession that would ride past Peet.

What happened next was simply incredible.

In just one week, people came together and made things happen.

A stage was arranged.
Music was organised.
A truck trailer was provided.
Traffic marshals were arranged.
An ambulance was present.
Even a hamburger stand was organised.

People gave their time, their resources, their contacts and, most importantly, their hearts.

Then the day arrived.

The motorcycles kept coming.

More and more.

It became a phenomenal turnout.

The sound of all those motorcycles, the people lining the route and the overwhelming sense of togetherness created a moment that is difficult to put into words.

But the most emotional moment was still to come.

On Sunday afternoon, we had the privilege of unveiling a black Opel Corsa for Peet and his wife.

His wish had become reality.

It was a deeply emotional moment.

But there was another surprise.

Because so many people had contributed, there was still enough money left to give Peet and his wife something else:

a week in Greece together.

One more journey.

One more opportunity to enjoy life together.

One more collection of memories that would stay with them forever.

When we look back on that extraordinary week in 2011, one feeling rises above all others:

gratitude.

An immense and deeply felt gratitude.

Not because one person made it happen, but because so many people came together and joined forces.

Motorcyclists.
Friends.
Business owners.
Volunteers.
People who knew Peet.
And people who may never have met him before.

Everyone contributed in their own way.

And that was the true power of this story.

Together, we made Peet’s wish come true.

That week taught us something we have never forgotten:

A helping hand can become something much greater when people come together and are willing to stand beside one another.

We had just one week.

One week in which people stepped forward, gave their time, opened their networks and allowed their hearts to speak.

And what came from that week will stay with us forever.

The black Opel Corsa was more than just a car.

It became a lasting symbol of love, friendship and solidarity.

And that week in Greece was more than just a holiday.

It was precious time.

Time to be together.

Time to enjoy life.

Time to create memories that would last forever.

Grateful.
Immensely grateful.

That is how we look back on 2011.

On Peet.

On his wish.

On all the people who opened their hearts.

And above all, on the power of TOGETHER.

Because sometimes, you don’t have to change the whole world.

Sometimes, it is enough to make a difference in the life of one person.

And when we do that together, we can create something far greater than any of us could ever achieve alone.
