From the Netherlands to Suriname – A Heart Full of Gratitude
By 2025, another special story had found its way to us.
It all began with a meeting with someone who had been working for three years on an incredible mission: filling a 40-foot container with clothing, shoes and all kinds of essential items for children in Suriname.
But the elderly had not been forgotten either.
When we heard the story, it touched us deeply.
Three years of collecting.
Three years of searching.
Three years of holding on to the hope that, one day, everything could be brought together and sent to the people who needed it most.
We decided to roll up our sleeves and help.
We started approaching companies and asking a simple question:
“Do you have anything left that could be of value to people in Suriname?”
At that time, I was working at Max-Vitaal, a healthcare store. Together with the company, we contacted many of our suppliers and explained what we were trying to accomplish.
The response was overwhelming.
Companies began offering goods that could no longer be sold but were still perfectly useful.
And then the pallets started arriving.
Sometimes as many as seven pallets at a time.
Very quickly, it became clear that one container would never be enough.
We needed a second 40-foot container.
And remarkably, that container was filled almost as quickly as the first.
What had started as one person’s three-year mission had grown into something much bigger.
Businesses were donating.
Suppliers were contributing.
People were giving.
Others were organising.
And somewhere along the way, what seemed like a simple collection became a powerful example of what can happen when people come together with the same intention:
to help others.
Even the transportation to the port was arranged completely free of charge.
The containers eventually began their journey across the ocean to Suriname.
And then came the moment we had been working toward.
In January 2025, we were privileged to travel to Suriname ourselves.
We wanted to be there personally.
Not simply to send the containers, but to open them, unload them and hand the goods directly to the people who needed them.
For us, that made the journey even more meaningful.
Over a period of around ten days, we saw many different sides of Suriname.
We met people.
We heard stories.
We saw happiness.
We also saw circumstances that made us stop and think.
Sometimes it was something as simple as a pair of shoes.
A piece of clothing.
A practical item.
Something that might seem ordinary to us in the Netherlands.
But for someone else, it could mean so much.
Those moments make you realise how much we actually have.
How easily we can take things for granted.
How fortunate many of us are.
And how powerful it can be when something we no longer need can become something of great value to another person.
Standing there in Suriname, surrounded by the people who received the goods, we felt something that is difficult to describe.
Gratitude.
Gratitude for the person who had spent three years collecting.
Gratitude for Max-Vitaal and the suppliers who opened their warehouses and gave what they could.
Gratitude for all the companies and individuals who contributed.
Gratitude for the people who made the transport possible.
And gratitude for everyone who believed that together, we could make a difference.
Two 40-foot containers.
Hundreds of boxes and countless items.
But behind every box was a story of generosity.
A company that decided to give.
A supplier that said yes.
A person who took the time to collect.
A volunteer who helped load.
A driver who transported.
And eventually, someone in Suriname who opened a box and received something they genuinely needed.
That is the true value of giving.
It is not about the object itself.
It is about what happens when one person says:
“I have something I can share.”
And another person receives it and realises:
“Someone thought about me.”
After around ten intense and unforgettable days, we eventually boarded the plane home.
We left Suriname with many impressions, many stories and many emotions.
But above all, we left with a full and grateful heart.
Once again, we had experienced the power of working together.
One person started the journey.
Many others joined.
And together, we filled not one, but two 40-foot containers.
Together, we got them to Suriname.
Together, we were able to distribute the contents to people who genuinely needed them.
And together, we learned another valuable lesson:
We are often much richer than we realise.
Not only because of what we have.
But because of what we are able to give.
With that thought in our hearts, we flew home.
Satisfied.
Thankful.
And deeply grateful that, through the generosity and cooperation of so many people, this too became possible.
Another helping hand.
Another journey.
Another story we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.
