Anatolian Pearls BV – Working together for a cleaner North Sea

Today marks the launch of a special research project focused on hemp rope for mussel farming. In collaboration with universities in Turkey and the Netherlands, the project investigates whether the traditional synthetic materials used in mussel farming can be replaced by a natural, more sustainable alternative: hemp rope.

The motivation behind this research is clear. Plastic waste left in and around the North Sea places a long-term burden on the marine environment. We therefore aim to determine whether hemp rope can offer a strong, reliable, and natural alternative for applications within the mussel industry.

The project brings together knowledge, innovation, and practical experience. Researchers from both countries will study various properties of hemp rope, including strength, durability, behavior in saltwater, and suitability for mussel farming.

For Anatolian Pearls BV, this is more than just research into a new material; it is a step toward a future where economic activity and environmental stewardship can be better balanced.

We are proud to contribute to this initiative alongside scientific partners from the Netherlands and Turkey. Through knowledge, collaboration, and innovation, we aim to explore whether a natural product like hemp can help reduce the amount of plastic in our seas.
